A 78-year-old Southampton man is closing in on his hospice fundraising challenge of cycling for 100 hours on a static bike before the end of June.

Barrie Colborne, dubbed The King of Woolston, has been using his ‘turbo trainer’ to clock up the miles during lockdown, in aid of Mountbatten Hampshire.

He is on course to meet his challenge of cycle for 100 hours by the end of this month.

Barrie wanted to support the Southampton hospice, which cared for his father-in-law before he died.

Various health issues now prevent Barrie from cycling on the roads but he uses his static bike daily.

“He is on his bike regularly anyway, so he just decided to turn it into something for charity.

“Come rain or shine, he’s outside on his bike getting his miles done.

“It’s now become a little competition between him and his daughter, Emma, as she did a 100-mile running challenge, which is why Barrie also now wants to reach 100."

Barrie’s challenge finishes on Tuesday. So far he has raised more than £570.
